Tell me a basic 4 line paragraph about the story of HL2:
Portals were emerging in Black Mesa during the resonance cascade, but portals also emerged from the sky back to the outside after the resonance cascade was done. The combine took over earth in 7 hours, as it's commonly known. Made a procreation barrier to prevent from "reproducing" as they wanted the last group of humans to be the last group of their species.
Vortigaunts allied with Humans after they invaded their homeland. Then "Gordon" comes out of his stasis and thus began HL2's in-game canon.

How are Vortigaunts involved in HL2?:
Vortigaunts were enemies back in the original Half Life, since "Gordon" killed Nihilanth, the vortigaunts were now free, thus after the Combine have invaded and enslaved their homeland, they allied with the human forces back in earth to defeat the Combine. Thus began them being implemented to HL2 as allies in earth.

Do a little RP with /me's of what a Vortigaunt does:

*[vortigaunt] nods wearily and says "Yes, master, this one does as the sir commands."
*CpU.EpU.001 nods.
*CpU.EpU.001 escorts the Vortigaunt through the city, looking for the most blood-stained wall.
CpU.EpU.001 says "This wall here, biotic. Get cleaning."
[vortigaunt] says "Of course, master. This one is humbled that it has been chosen to do the master's bidding."
CpU.EpU.001 says "As you should."
*[vortigaunt] begins to dip the rag into the soapy water inside the bucket, and scrubs the walls with the rag.
CpU.EpU.001 says "Alright, that's enough."
